Anritsu Introduces First-of-Its-Kind Evaluation Tool for Hybrid eCall Automotive Emergency System

October 8, 2025

Anritsu has unveiled a pioneering evaluation solution designed for the “Hybrid eCall,” a next-generation automotive emergency communication system. This breakthrough tool is the first in the industry to support Hybrid eCall, which combines high-speed 4G (LTE) connectivity with legacy 2G (GSM/GPRS) and 3G (W-CDMA) networks. By doing so, it guarantees continuous emergency communication regardless of the vehicle’s location. The solution aids automakers in developing vehicles that are fully compatible with Hybrid eCall efficiently and reliably.

The Importance of Hybrid eCall

The eCall system automatically triggers emergency response procedures after detecting a crash. When vehicle sensors register an accident, the In-Vehicle System (IVS) sends critical information, including location and vehicle status, to the Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP). Emergency operators then leverage this data to dispatch assistance quickly.

Traditional eCall systems relied mainly on 2G and 3G networks, but the adoption of Next Generation (NG) eCall over 4G is accelerating. NG eCall provides faster, more stable communication and introduces advanced capabilities, such as transmitting video from the accident site. The European Union has announced that NG eCall will become mandatory starting January 1, 2026, prompting automotive manufacturers to prioritize compliance.

Yet, areas without 4G coverage still require conventional eCall services. Hybrid eCall, which automatically switches between NG eCall and traditional eCall depending on network conditions, addresses this challenge. Implementing Hybrid eCall ensures that vehicles can make reliable emergency calls anywhere, enhancing safety for drivers and passengers alike.

Features of Anritsu’s Solution

Anritsu’s Hybrid eCall evaluation tool allows automakers to perform complete testing using a single MD8475B signaling tester, removing the need for multiple devices. The system streamlines the testing process, as users don’t need to juggle several software platforms, improving workflow efficiency. Additionally, it supports SRVCC (Single Radio Voice Call Continuity), enabling VoLTE calls to transfer seamlessly from LTE networks to 2G or 3G networks. This capability ensures uninterrupted voice communication, even during network transitions, delivering reliable performance across different mobile technologies.

By providing robust support for the development of Hybrid eCall-enabled vehicles, Anritsu is helping automotive manufacturers advance vehicle safety and contribute to a more secure and connected mobile society.
